A Summary Of Kanayas Carriero Development
Kanaya is coming in with memories and changes she has experienced during a period of ten months in Carriero, a very small asylum jamjar. For this reason, she is going to have distinct memories of most everyone who was ever there during her stay; I will contact the players of anyone Kanaya knew and if they say the word Kanaya will not recognize their character as identical to the one she knew. Either way, she's got a rather firm grasp on the concept of alternate realities, so this shouldn't be too much of a problem. Except for Eridan but Kiva's okay with that. Please note that in this document less work has been taken to accommodate the canon-blind due to the greater depth and breadth of material. Sorry!
Kanaya's arrival in the asylum was simultaneous with that of her canonmate Eridan Ampora... though he was from an hour in the future relative to her and so possessed a magic wand that her future self had made for him, which would be a mystery for Kanaya to the end of her days in Carriero. They were the only trolls in an asylum full of Earth humans, and so they stuck together from the start.
It was a pretty bad time to arrive. There were various soldiers and terrorists around not to mention bodyswapping shenanigans. After being roped into the player characters' resistance movement, Kanaya found herself in a brutal fight to defend the asylum. Nobody really understood what was going on, least of all Kanaya, but they managed to achieve a moderately improved version of the spooky jamjar status quo that had existed prior to Kanaya's arrival.
Meanwhile, Kanaya bonded instantly with a gothically inclined human girl by the name of Andrea Norton. However, Andrea had died in the fight by a mistake Eridan had made, and even though her respawn was not only timely but also released her from an extremely undesirable bodyswap, she was indignant and passionately declared her hate for Eridan in precisely the terms of a caliginous romance. Kanaya was compelled on the spot to intervene and become their auspistice, which... well, seee, there's the problem. This was explained as a pact for Kanaya to mediate between Andrea and Eridan at the outset, and then later as a three-way romantic relationship. Kanaya and Eridan don't view these things as contradictory in the slightest, or in fact as meaning different things at all. Andrea does.
But that's future her. Past her, along with Kanaya, planned a Christmas party with resources stolen from rooms abandoned by the doctors. December was generally a peaceful time, where the inmates' bonds grew stronger. Samus Aran, as a mature human woman with a galactopolitian attitude, made a positive impression on Kanaya. So did Monoko, an incredibly sweet and charmingly creepy ghost girl. Gamzee Makara, another canonmate and fellow troll, also arrived, though Kanaya viewed this as less good than bad, since he was something of a drug-addled moron, meaning that he was nothing more than someone for Kanaya to fuss over. Nevertheless, she gave him a cake with sopor baked into it for Christmas, in accordance with his practices.
More cherished were the gifts exchanged between the members of her auspisticism. Andrea gave both Eridan and Kanaya goth-themed pins. Kanaya especially treasured her red-and-black My Chemical Romance one. Eridan made his girlfriends matching bracelets intertwining ashen gray with all three parties' blood colors. Kanaya made a charm with a skull on it, which she perceived to be Andrea's symbol and a purple-and-black striped scarf for Eridan. The last gift was especially risky, as it bordered on provocative in the pale sense. But he was okay with that. All six items were worn daily. This was the high point of the relationship: Andrea and Kanaya were very close friends, while Eridan and Kanaya's dynamic almost bordered on that of moirallegiance.
Then not long after this the TF2 event happened. Inmates were put onto the RED or BLU team, given classes and weapons, and ordered to act out TF2 for a while. Some of the inmates consented because they were rational human beings -- or troll beings, as the case happened to be for all three of them. Even though they weren't all on the same team and therefore some were spatially separated, there was an almost hivemind-like understanding that they would play the game to the utilitarian fullest in order that at least some of them might get the prize: A view of what was occurring back at home. However, someone (spoilers, it was Andrea) was uncomfortable with the whole operation and manipulated almost everyone else into refusing to play, by means including but not limited to kissing alien boys right on the mouth even when Kanaya had been bending over backwards for several weeks now to prevent that from ever taking place.
Fortunately, Kanaya was on the other team and had no idea! So when their team came over to arrange that there would be no fighting, all was well. The RED Medic (the actual TF2 character who happened to be an inmate) burst into their petty little peace summit and opened fire. Andrea tried to take the bullet, leading Kanaya to declare that "Nobody shoots my girlfriend without permission!" and attack Medic to defend her ashen love. Andrea didn't get a scratch on her because she was on the RED team too, but Kanaya died fighting.
Kanaya respawned to finish Medic off and found that, while she had been out, an unusually alert Gamzee had been helping wear him down. This caused her to begin seeing him in a new light. Meanwhile, she was also seeing Monoko in a new light after it turned out she could have five arms and white blood.
To her disappointment, when they were returned to the asylum Monoko had been dropped and Eridan was on hiatus. Andrea went around crowing about her "victory" for a few days (a dubious term considering nobody had been given the prize). Kanayaa went to talk things out with her, was told about the kiss, heard the claims that Andrea was "straight" and "seventeen", had to identify herself as "gay", and left with the conviction that their auspisticism had been strengthened when somehow Andrea believed that they had broken up. They also plotted to put Eridan into a dress, which was the only thing Andrea had described that would both please her and not involve never seeing the trolls again.
Then Eridan got unlocked, found out about how Andrea had actually manipulated him, and went off to get well-deserved hatemakeouts in revenge. Though Kanaya interrupted, the incident drove Andrea to self-harm. Gamzee got roped in to Kanaya's attempt at killing Medic again to comfort Andrea, as she believed the goth girl reacted so strongly to Eridan's harrassment as a result of sexually-themed trauma Medic had inflicted on her in the past. They wrote a message to her in his blood to be broadcast over the network, but then the communicator also picked up Medic getting back up and killing them both. Andrea's rational response to this situation entailed going down to yell at him armed with nothing but a desk lamp and/or a table leg. At this point he sexually assaulted her. That was Valentine's Day. ...It's a slow game.
The next day (from Kanaya's perspective: she'd been dead a few days before being respawned), the patients were all in one room tied to chairs, and it was finally proven that they had won no victory at all for the Andrea-led rebellion, but were in fact being punished by electroshock for their conduct during the TF2 event. Andrea revealed what had happened the other night and that she was deeply disturbed by now -- enough to burn the place to the ground and kill everyone inside given the chance. People shouted her down for that, Kanaya among them. Afterwards, she and Kanaya had another heartfelt conversation where Kanaya apologized for being harsh with her and Andrea asserted that she loved the younger alien girl. Somehow she came out of that one convinced that they'd broken up.
The downtime that ensued was somber. Gamzee showed some more signs of the alertness he'd demonstrated during the TF2 event, tempered with a disturbing morbidity, in writing formal, touching apologies... all over the asylum's walls, in his own blood. Monoko was replaced by Taylor, a canonmate of Andrea's who enabled her behavior. Hayato Gokudera, that young man from Katekyo Hitman Reborn who was pretty much the only reliable human being in the asylum by that point, was planning a party. Kanaya very nearly gave herself troll carpal tunnel syndrome making outfits for everyone to wear to it... including a dress for Eridan. She poured her heart and soul into thatMarch April May monstrosity in a last-ditch attempt to save her auspisticism. It was hell convincing Eridan into that thing, but worth it because... she was finally at the point where she was willing to admit she was in nonsexual alien love with this pompous asshole.
The night of the party came with Kanaya and Eridan at Andrea's room, chipper about their hopes of finally going public as acouple triad. In a classic example of her incorrigible desire to have and eat her cake, Andrea viciously laughed at Akhera (not Eridana, holy Christ) but petulantly asserted she thought they had broken up. This time it finally stuck. Kanaya and Andrea both discarded all the Christmas gifts they were still wearing and stormed out of the room; what they didn't realize at the time was that Eridan would never come out. They went up to the party, where their newfound enmity solidified. Gokudera learned about quadrants, and Gamzee made it clear he'd developed caliginous feelings for Medic after the repeated attacks that had occurred.
Samus was also gone after the party after several weeks of increasingly frequent lockups, but fortunately a new adult human female was here in her place: Willow Rosenberg, vampire-hunting witch. She and Kanaya bonded firmly and quickly, which was exactly what she needed when it turned out that Eridan's disappearance was permanent. Andrea figuratively danced on his grave as Kanaya somberly announced this; then provoked by Kanaya's curt request to have as little as possible to do with her, she broke into Kanaya's room, emptied out her recuperacoon, put trash where sopor slime belonged (and everywhere else), carved a nasty message into her desk, and left her a blanket noose. Kanaya cleaned up and did nothing more save break a mirror and slide a passive-aggressive note written in lipstick under Andrea's door. Since the mirror was in the bathroom Kanaya shared with Taylor, that girl came in to investigate, but found Kanaya's explanations so dissatisfactory that she punched her in the face.
It was a bad night given the recuperacoon issue. But she survived through the downtime as patients came and patients went, her canonmates among them. The most significant arrival was of Dave Strider - or rather, as Kanaya knew him... Steve. It had been so long since the six hours in the veil that she misremembered him that way. The most significant departure was Medic's. He committed suicide as a show for Gamzee, who... beheaded his corpse. But then he didn't respawn. Kanaya meddled with Gamzee even as he demonstrated increasingly flagrant instability: He was filling the four-cornered void that Eridan had left behind. Their volatile bond was reinforced by their pairing during group therapy, where they were assigned to intimately discuss their issues relating to the human race... including caliginous relations. (As a troll said when told about the situation, the whole noose incident and so on were "some of the darkest come-ons I've ever fuckin' seen".) For a fair couple of months, they were virtually each other's only company.
After group therapy, everyone received rewards for participating. Kanaya's was a makeup kit. Now for several months she had had only human makeup at her disposal, which didn't reflect troll coloration. So when she finally had real makeup again, she took the bold step of applying it to her eyes as well as her lips. JADEBLOOD. Gamzee commented on the fact that her blood was an attractive color, but that appeared to be entirely normal crazy clown kid talk at the time.
There was an incident involving Mario Party that led to an asylum containing neither sopor slime, a respawn, nor a karaoke machine free of Insane Clown Posse tracks. Kanaya should not have been first to approach Gamzee with affairs in this state, and scraping her fangs along the inside of his arm was probably also not particularly good decision making, but she was, she did, and she paid for her folly with her life. At least she learned to glow in the dark and approached Andrea to ascertain her safety, taking out all her repressed anger on her in the process. Andrea tried to appease her with... a kiss. KISMESISSITUDE. At least according to Kanaya.
Then Gamzee got dead, and that event ended, shortly after which the asylums' owners finally send the inmates home. Kanaya will be coming right after that dust settled.
So! How exactly did all this drama change Kanaya's personality? She's advanced in some ways her canon self did, others she didn't, and regressed in a few. Basically, she has a less multicultural form of her canonical sharp vampire maturity. Carriero has let her reflect on her fellow trolls such that she'll approach most of them in a kinder, more mature way. In particular, her time and troubles with Andrea have caused her to reflect on her issues with Vriska and regard the troll thief as a better compatriot. Her friendship with Eridan, of course, is also intact - really much stronger than it ever was canonically. This creates the final positive difference from canon: She still has hope, including the goal of hatching the matriorb, because canon's event of Eridan destroying it never occurred for her.
The main price of this has been her faith in humanity. With hardly any exceptions, everyone she has ever loved either disappeared or turned on her. Carriero may have been a game where anyone could appear, but nearly everyone who stayed there long-term operated by trolls' tactics - codependency, melodrama, violence - while paying lip service to the standards of human society. Kanaya has therefore essentially come to the conclusion that humans are not really different from trolls on the inside and becomes frustrated whenever they prove otherwise. She looks at The Human Dysfunction Of Amorous Inclination as a sad shadow of viable romance and thinks humans have no ethics whatsoever when it comes to murder, because many of Carriero's more unstable residents, between their simple vileness and the place's respawn system, simply didn't. She doesn't quite actively seek out violence against them and is even perfectly willing to make nice with a human who makes a positive impression, but at this point it doesn't take too much to make her Antagonize Members Of A Trivial Species. Her disparagement of their Primitive race are canonical, after all, albeit in early stages.
Their romantic mores are some of the most repellent issues of all to her. As far as she's seen, humans are literally JUST as capable of caliginous, pale, and ashen attractions as flushed ones, and she is frustrated to no end that apparently instead of partitioning relationships in a logical way such as by emotional content, they decided that whether or not two parties were of the same sex or not mattered to the relationship, going so far as to label the individuals involved "straight", "bi", or "gay". Kanaya was perfectly comfortable in her awareness of her homosexuality before coming to Carriero, but felt a closet suddenly being built around her by humans' heteronormativity. Over time, she came to develop more ownership of her lesbian identity, even though she resented its being thrust upon her in the first place.
All this business has put her in an odd place relative to the human kids back home. She'd come to comprehend the strange human emotion known as friendship there and had memories of that group not entirely comprising total assholes. However, these recollections were increasingly faint. She had been trolling for barely an hour -- 5:12:30 to 4:13:59 -- at her canon point, barely long enough to leave an adversarial stage. Carriero thereby built another closet around her: Human skepticism to her claims of godhood, without Sgrub or Sburb as her proof.
She's naturally cynical after everything she's endured and doesn't like to put up with bullshit. This has simultaneously amplified her natural snark and her contempt for non-straightforwardness. Contradictory, I know. While she's conversationally insincere how she pleases, she does so as a deliberately caustic act, not because she considers it charming... most of the time. In short, very similar to the way sarcasm was viewed during Hivebent by trolls.
Except she's not a troll anymore. She's a rainbow drinker. She kills boys and kisses girls and drinks blood and doesn't take no for an answer. That's troll blood, not humans' off-the-spectrum substitute for it -- and she'll call it that, maybe even a shitty one, because Eridan and Gamzee aren't exactly the best influences to have. The human social order in Carriero being so lacking has led her to somewhat acknowledge the order provided by the hemospectrum as admirable. She's never going to advocate outright discrimination against lowbloods, but at this point she'll passively allow highbloods to preach their own superiority.
Because Kanaya Maryam is a jadeblood, the perfect intermediary between castes, wearing matching lipstick that turns into a chainsaw with which she auspisticizes -- though only figuratively, she hastens to clarify. She seeks out passion of flushed, pale, caliginous, and ashen varieties, though not necessarily in that order because no one is more important than the others. She carries the matriorb in her sylladex and will one day hatch it to rescue her race from the brink of extinction. She is your god, and she is going to stick to her guns on these points from the get-go this time. The Initiative makes that all the easier by providing her with a shotgun form of the eyeshadow that repeats her lipstick's message a second time.
