SPAIN... we talked a lot about how these two slowly came to understand each other more. both their canons are so weird they still never see eye to eye on the issues themselves (May is ten that's totally old enough to handle kunai) and however close they got Kanaya would probably be extremely reluctant to ever bring up any personal problems with him because he would just try to cheer her up and that's not really what she wants when she's unhappy. but Kanaya has come to respect that Spain is actually rather competent in several different areas, LIKE THE SWORDSMANSHIP. (She's probably not learning spanish though. earth languages are really hard for her and it doesn't seem to be as useful for keeping stuff secret. Japanese is a big challenge already) She's also really willing to Take Spain Aside and say things like "do not say you liked Miss Kaoru better, I totally get where you're coming from there, but Hakuoki is a canon chockful of serious suffering" or "please get Poland to shut up about my sex life at least a few hours. okay just one hour I can be realistic"

Oh... I actually really like the idea of Kanaya being the one to tell Spain why Kaoru was so :/ around him and Spain is just like... totally shocked HE WAS JUST TEASING HE DIDN'T MEAN IT THAT WAY.

But yeah, he is really good for lending an ear and giving advice once in awhile but his strength is definitely in cheering people up. Listening is easy but he suffers from genuinely not Understanding. Despite everything, he's pretty rigid and traditional in his thinking so he just hits walls with things like ALIENS AND TROLLS, man. It would take a bit for him to adapt in a way that would be meaningful outside a survival context.

yes... I would love to log that conversation, as soon as you and aki can provide a remark to jump off or w/e. ("Did you even watch his execution") things like other MM characters are okay for Kanaya to tackle with Spain. she is really convinced he would never understand about troll culture though. even Susan was nonplussed by the sheer fact barrier going on there. Spain might not even have heard enough to identify Eridan (trolls in descending order of likelihood to have come up: Eridan, Vriska, Karkat, Aradia, Gamzee, Feferi, Sollux, Terezi, Nepeta, Tavros, Equius.) Troll culture actually is really insistent that Listening is utterly unimportant unless accompanied by Understanding to the point that it's almost inappropriate to make someone Listen to you when they haven't agreed to Understand... so she won't
